In the springtime come many rights of passage for many different religions. These ceremonies are for adults and children alike, and the parties to celebrate these great steps forward in a person’s religious life should be fun for all ages! Some of the common ceremonies of the spring include First Communion (Catholic), Confirmation (Catholic and Orthodox Christian), Unitarian Coming of Age, Jewish Confirmation, and Wiccan Coming of Age. A very special celebration that happens year-round is the Baptism or Christening. When a party is given for any of these special occasions, printed Baptism, Christening, Communion & Other Religious Invitations should be sent to all your invited guests, and matching Baptism, Christening, Communion & Other Religious Thank You Cards should be sent after the party was held.
The First Communion ritual celebrates the Catholic child’s second step toward full initiation into the Church. After preparing through study in catechism classes, the Catholic child is ready to receive Communion for the first time, which is a wafer of bread that represents the body of Jesus Christ (in reference to the Last Supper). The Communion wafer is also known as the Eucharist. Giving a party after the First Communion have become very popular in recent years, and if you’re planning a First Communion party of your own, remember to cater to both the children and the adults as guests.
The third and final step of a Catholic child’s initiation into the church, and for Orthodox Christians as well, is confirmation. Catholics and Orthodox Christians recognize Confirmation as one of seven sacraments, this one signaling the mature acceptance of faith and full church membership. Protestants also recognize Confirmation as a rite of initiation into full Christian discipleship.
Other common coming-of-age rituals are Unitarian, Jewish, and Wiccan. The Unitarian Coming of Age celebrates the culmination of a teen’s exploration into UU principles, practices, and history, work on a service project, and the development of a personal credo (with the help of a mentor) that they present to the entire congregation. Similarly as a culmination, in Reform Jewish practice (and occasionally Conservative), their Confirmation marks the graduation from religious school. The Wiccan Coming of Age celebrates fertility and adulthood between the ages of 13 and 18.
A party celebration that is not limited to the spring is Baptism or Christening. In this event, a new baby is welcomed into Christian religious life by his/her family and church. This ceremony can also be performed on older children and adults, as it was only performed on adults until the fourth century, but today it is usually performed for infants. Another option is to have a naming ceremony, which can be non-secular without religious overtones.
