Party-Holiday-Supplies.com :: Pinatas
Piñatas are a fun activity for parties, and have been for many years. Piñatas may have originated in China as a part of a New Year’s ritual. Marco Polo discovered the Chinese making figures of oxen and cows and other animals, then covering them with brightly colored paper. The figures would be knocked with colored sticks and spill forth seeds during the New Year procession. Marco Polo likely carried this idea to Europe with him where it became a Lenten custom in Italy. The word “piñata” comes from an Italian word meaning “fragile pot.” In Italy the piñatas were made out of clay pots. The customs spread to Spain, where the clay pots eventually became decorated with ribbons, fringed paper, and tinsel.
Piñatas surfaced in the Americas by way of Spanish missionaries. The missionaries used the piñata to attract converts, especially since the Aztecs and Mayans already had a similar tradition. The Aztecs would celebrate the birthday of their god of war by placing a clay pot adorned with colored feathers on a pole, and the pot contained tiny treasures. When broken with a stick, the treasures would fall to the altar of the god as an offering. The Mayans invented the practice of covering a person’s eyes while they hit at the clay pot that was suspended by a string.
At that time, the missionaries transformed the game for religious instruction, saying the piñata symbolized evil, the player symbolized the force of good and faith, and the treasures inside symbolized the rewards for defeating evil with faith. Today, the piñata has lost its religious symbolism, but it is still widely used for fun and parties. Whether you fill your piñata with candies and fruits, as is traditionally done, or with toys and prizes, a piñata is always a fun addition to any party!
